FunnyPlaying Game Boy Color Q5 Laminated IPS Screen Kit v1.3 with OSD

Note:

**We have added the awesome new Hispeedido OLED screen kit to our range here and also as an option in this listing, as it also fits in the Funnyplaying shells! Please use the link for full details on the OLED kit, soldering of one wire is required.**

This v1.3 revision of the Funny Playing Q5 GBC IPS screen is the newest version of the GBC kit (newer than v2.7) Check out this article Which Game Boy Color Screen From FunnyPlaying Is The Best?

The Game Boy Color v1.3 revision has some awesome added features;

1. This v1.3 is a drop in version and if desired the power wire does not need soldering for it to function.

2. OSD included in the ribbon software

3. Added logo backlight display and color change

4. Laminated lens which comes pre stuck to the screen. (No extra glass lens required)

5. Adjust the position of the image post installation.

6. Touch sensor performance is improved and includes brightness control

7. 5 display modes (default/none, vertical scan lines (standard, dark, or thick), and retro pixel grid)

What is included;

  • 1 x IPS LCD Screen
  • 1 x ribbon cable (FunnyPlaying)
  • 1 x Laminated lens
  • 2 x light bleed stickers (Optional)
  • 3 x wires (Optional for button controls)
  • 1 x touch ribbon cable (optional incase of malfunction of the built in touch sensor)

What is not included;

- Tape to prevent possible shorts. We recommend Kapton tape.

FunnyPlaying Laminated Shell

Notes;

1. The original power management of the GBC motherboard is very inefficient. This ribbon bypasses the inefficient power management and has its own within the ribbon.

2. Shell modification to fit the laminated lens is not recommended. Instead you can purchase a FunnyPlaying GBC shell which has been specially moulded to fit.

3. The original GBC display is 43 x 41mm. This display is 49.5 x 44.5mm. A lens is not required as one is laminated as part of the screen.

4. The built in touch sensor controls the OSD

Press and hold the touch sensor = OSD activation / deactivation

Short tap touch sensor = move up in the selected option

Long tap touch sensor = move right on the OSD options

BRT = Screen brightness

DSP = Display mode (5 levels)

FRM = Frame blending (remove flickering)

LGC = Logo Color (27 presets)

RGB = Set your own color

N = next page

XST = Moving screen on the X adis

YST = Moving display on the Y axis

5. Please test your screen kit for faults before installation. Any issues are to be reported before installing inside a shell or adhering to gasket. A photo or video will be required for any warranty claims. Check out this easy to follow article on How To Test the GBC Screen Before Installation.

6. Note that once the screen is stuck down it will not remove without damaging the screen or the ribbon.

7. Ensure you trim the sharp ends of the cartridge slot pins from your GBC motherboard before installation, to avoid any shorts. Also cover with kapton tape or electrical tape.

8. It is advisable to wear a static bracelet before installing the screen to avoid any potential shorts. We also highly recommend insulating the PCB with Kapton tape as any contact with the PCB could prevent the screen from working correctly.

Solder free but soldering is an option!

First screen install, went well, modified an older green yellow gbc. Install was easy enough, I soldered as i didnt trust the added metallic tape. I dont solder at all but it was easy enough. Screen looks great! Didnt need to install the provided touch sensor as the screen came with one in built.

Incredible mod and awesome functions

I am SUPER happy with how the 2.7 IPS screen mod turned out. The install is super easy from start to finish, although you do need to either buy one of their pre-cut shells or have the tools to cut away a third party or original shell yourself. I'm impressed with how easily the touch sensor works through the plastic of the shell. An unexpected bonus was the fact I could change the colour (32 bits RGB colour, completely customisable) of the Gameboy Color lettering at the bottom of the bezel. My only feedback would be for RGP to provide more shells in more colours - I would have loved to be able to buy a purple-grape coloured shell as that was the colour I had when I was a kid. Also to include a bit of paper with a link/QR code to the tiktok where the install videos/guides are. But honestly I'm over the moon with how it turned out. Thanks RGP for providing such an awesome mod!

Improvements: Honestly no complaints
Definitely get the replacement shell

Great screen, works perfectly and is very plug and play, that said, spend the extra cash and get the replacement shell that fits the screen! Was a hell of a lot of careful work to cut the original shell and in future I won't be doing it again.

No complaints with the screen however, brilliant kit and very affordable

Amazing GBC Mod!

I love this mod! I had recently purchased the NES Q5 laminated GBC kit directly from FunnyPlaying, but unfortunately, received a v2.3 ribbon. Being I do not know how to solder, I was unable to get power to the LCD. I subsequently went to purchase the v2.7 kit from Retro Gaming Parts, and man, was it worth it! I was able to get the custom NES laminated display up and running without any soldering, and was able to complete my build! The kit arrived safely and quickly to the US from Australia! Was very happy with my purchase. I highly recommend buying the v2.7 kit, especially if you do not know how to soldier, as it is effectively a “drop-in” kit. It would be a nice option if FunnyPlaying shipped the NES laminated display with a v2.7 ribbon as standard. Maybe something that will happen in the future.
